#74 The UPDATE framework for server-side GTM migrations (with Matthew Hooson @ Measurelab)

Daniel Perry-Reed24 March 202341 min listen

This week Dan and Dara are joined by Matthew Hooson from Measurelab to talk about server-side Google Tag Manager (sGTM) and the UPDATE framework to best migrate over to server-side tagging. Hear Matthew talk to Dara and Dan about what he and the team have learned from doing many sGTM migrations, and what the top things to consider when migrating are.

Check out the UPDATE framework from Matthew on how to migrate to sGTM, Why you should consider Cloud Run for server-side GTM, and How to access BigQuery data from server-side GTM (via Firestore).

And as always, visit Simo's blog for even more resources on the topic.

In other news, Matthew built a wall!

Quote of the episode from Matthew: "You're certainly putting yourself in a certain amount of digital debt from the maintenance side of things (of server-side GTM)... We're pretty upfront with clients when we're talking about these kinds of projects that this isn't a one and done ,off you go, skip off into the sunset with your new conversion APIs. This is something that needs continuous thought, it needs reporting, it needs to be monitored..."

Quote of the episode from Dan: "...(server-side GTM) 100% squarely in IT's camp, the marketers have access to a proportion of that which they can play with safely. And I think that's for me, the idea there is that we're kind of appeasing IT and also not removing any capabilities from marketing."
